English Competitions

English competitions are engaging academic challenges that help children strengthen reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, and speaking skills.

These competitions encourage confidence, critical thinking, and a love for language — skills that support success across all subjects.

  • Spelling Bee
Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a nationally recognized academic competition for students in Grade 8 and below. Many children begin participating in elementary school to strengthen vocabulary, spelling accuracy, memory, and public speaking skills.

Who can participate?
Students in Grades 1–8
Elementary participation is common in Grades 1–5.

Spelling Bee Pathway:
School Bee: Classroom and school-level bees (typically held in the fall)
Regional Bee: School champions compete with other schools
National Bee: Regional champions advance to Washington, D.C.

School Enrollment Period (2025–2026):
August 19, 2025 – January 30, 2026
Schools must enroll for students to participate.

Washington State – Regional Competition:
• Region: King & Snohomish Counties
• Regional Partner: Town Hall Seattle
• School Champion Registration Deadline: March 3, 2026
• Regional Bee Date: March 29, 2026
• Location: Town Hall Seattle, Seattle, WA

Families can enter their school’s ZIP code on the Spelling Bee website to find regional partners, dates, and locations in their area.

Prizes & Recognition:
• Certificates and educational subscriptions for participants
• Medals, gift cards, and scholarships for national competitors
• The National Champion receives a $50,000 cash prize, the Scripps Cup, and additional academic awards

Why it’s great for elementary students:
The Spelling Bee builds strong reading and language skills, confidence speaking in public, and pride in academic effort — even for students who participate only at the school level.
